There is fear of a new strike by Nigerian government universities, while the National Union of University Teachers, ASUU, is holding its Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Calabar, Cross River State. As reported by the Daily Post.
Democratic sources learned that the meeting started yesterday, Saturday, December 3 of this year, and that the meeting is still ongoing.
The Union of Nigerian Universities (ASUU) has faced a dispute between the workers and the Nigerian government over the failure to fulfill the promises it made and the continued refusal to pay its members their salaries for the eight months that the union went on strike.
If it can be recalled that the union called off the 8-month strike on October 14, 2022, after the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila intervened between them and the federal government.
However, the government insisted on implementing the ‘No Work, No Salary’ policy for the duration of the university staff’s absences.

The Union of Nigerian Universities (ASUU) has faced a dispute between the workers and the Nigerian government over the failure to fulfill the promises it made and the continued refusal to pay its members their salaries for the eight months that the union went on strike.
If it can be recalled that the union called off the 8-month strike on October 14, 2022, after the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila intervened between them and the federal government.

A member of ASUU who spoke to DAILY POST from Calabar, the capital of Cross Rivers state, confirmed that the group is currently meeting.
“Yes, we are having a meeting, and the meeting is still going on
Now there is no pressure that we have reached because the final decision has not been made
“The issue is that we only take reports; now we have not reached the issue of salary payment,” he said.
In the meantime, ASUU last week ordered its members to protest against the denial of their salaries for eight months.
Democratic sources reported that ASUU members of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), the University of Nigeria in Nsukka (UNN), and the University of Ibadan (UI), among others, joined the protest to get their demands met.
