THE IMPACT OF SEVERE DEHYDRATION ON BREASTFEEDING MOTHERS AND ITS CONSEQUENT EFFECTS ON CHILD MORTALITY.
CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Severe dehydration is a critical health concern, especially among breastfeeding mothers, as it directly impacts both maternal and child health. Dehydration occurs when there is a significant loss of body fluids, more than what is taken in, leading to an imbalance in electrolytes and the body’s ability to function normally. In breastfeeding mothers, dehydration can reduce milk production, affect overall health, and increase the risk of complications for both the mother and the infant.
In Malumfashi Local Government Area of Katsina State, where the climate is predominantly arid, the risk of dehydration is heightened, making it a significant public health issue. Despite its importance, there is limited data on how the community manages dehydration, the factors responsible for it, and the awareness level of the people in treating dehydration at home. Moreover, understanding the impact of dehydration on child mortality in this region is crucial for developing effective interventions. (Nigerian Health Organizations, 2015)
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Breastfeeding mothers in Malumfashi are particularly vulnerable to dehydration due to the high temperatures and limited access to clean water. Dehydration in these mothers can lead to a cascade of health issues, including reduced breast milk production, which is vital for the nutrition and development of infants. The problem is compounded by a lack of awareness and resources to effectively manage dehydration at home, leading to preventable child mortality. Addressing this issue is essential to improving maternal and child health outcomes in the region.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The objectives of this study are as follows:
- To investigate how the community manages dehydration cases when they occur.
- To identify the factors responsible for cases of dehydration in the community.
- To determine the level of awareness among people in the study area regarding how to treat dehydration at home.
- To assess the rate of child mortality as a result of dehydration in the study area.
1.4 Research Questions
This study seeks to answer the following questions:
- What methods are used by the community to manage dehydration?
- What are the primary factors contributing to dehydration among breastfeeding mothers in Malumfashi?
- How knowledgeable are the residents of Malumfashi in managing dehydration at home?
- What is the rate of child mortality due to dehydration in this area?
1.5 Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides valuable insights into the management of dehydration among breastfeeding mothers in Malumfashi. By identifying the factors contributing to dehydration, the level of awareness regarding its management, and the impact on child mortality, this research will inform public health interventions and policies aimed at reducing dehydration-related complications in the region. Additionally, the findings will be useful for healthcare providers, policymakers, and non-governmental organizations working to improve maternal and child health in Malumfashi.
1.6 Scope of the Study
The study will focus on breastfeeding mothers in Malumfashi Local Government Area of Katsina State. It will explore the community’s management practices of dehydration, the factors responsible for its occurrence, the awareness level of dehydration management at home, and the impact of dehydration on child mortality. The study will not cover other health issues related to breastfeeding or dehydration cases in other populations outside the study area.
